ICC Wants Kenyan Suspects' Property Held

The International Criminal Court has sought the Kenyan Government's assistance in identifying and freezing properties owned by the 6 post election violence suspects, until the cases they face at the Hague-based court are concluded. The court's registrar, Silvana Arbia in a letter addressed to the Attorney General, asked the Government to place a caveat on the property owned by the 6, to prevent its sale or transfer of any nature to third parties. But in instances where the suspects' perceived wealth is collectively owned by their families, how will the state execute the court's directive and freeze such properties? Legal experts familiar with the Rome statute however point out that the court's request is nothing out of the ordinary, citing the case of Jean Pierre Bemba, whose property was frozen, pending the determination of his crimes against humanity case.
