Kenya: Teachers' Strike Paralyses Learning

Kenya's public education system was paralyzed after teachers made good their threat to go on strike. Most teachers in public primary and secondary schools around the country boycotted classes and instead converged at KNUT branches across the country. The strike coincides with the re-opening of schools for the third and final term of the year. The teachers had resolved to stay away from classes saying the government had refused to hold talks on their demands for the implementation of a 300 per cent salary increment agreement signed in 1997. Sally Mbilu paints for us a picture of how the situation was in schools around the country with the following report.
