The African Water Facility (AWF) Governing Council is an important body whose mission is to determine the general policy direction of the Facility in its annual meetings. The Governing Council has thirteen members comprising five members appointed by AMCOW (the African Ministerial Council on water), five members appointed by donors to the Funds, one member appointed by the AfDB, one member appointed by the African Union (represented by NEPAD-secretariat), and one member appointed by UN-Water/Africa. The current president of the Governing Council is His Excellency Mr. Monyane Moleleki, Minister of Natural Resources of the Kingdom of Lesotho.
This year, the meeting will be held in Nouakchott, Mauritania from November 30 to 1 December 2009. During this meeting, the Governing Council will review the AWF's annual report of activities financed from its resources. The Governing Council will also review the Facility's 2009 progress report and its work plan and budget. This important meeting serves as a forum for the Governing Council to initiate and continue discussions for a general replenishment of AWF's resources, and the adoption of its work plan and budget.
The AWF is an initiative led by AMCOW to mobilize resources to finance water resources development in Africa. The African Development Bank hosts the Facility on the request of AMCOW. Since its creation in 2004, the Facility has approved 53 projects totalling 58.2 million Euros across Africa in sectors such as water governance, investment to meet water needs, strengthening of the financial base, and water knowledge.
Sering Jallow, AfDB Officer in Charge of Water and Sanitation/AWF, will lead a delegation to participate in this meeting.
