Regional Symposium On West Africa Common Industrial Policy to Hold in Lome

Abuja - Nigeria — A three-day regional symposium on the West Africa Common Industrial Policy (WACIP), is to take in Lome, Togo 28-30 March 2012, with the aim of mobilizing national and community stakeholders towards effective implementation of the policy objectives in the region.

The symposium will be held in two sessions, the first for experts from the public, private sectors and other stakeholders while the second session on 30th March, will involve Ministers in charge of Industry in the ECOWAS region.

The objectives of the meeting include informing and training national and community actors as well as representatives of the private sector and the media on the WACIP content, especially the policy's ten regional programmes, and securing from ECOWAS Member States, guidelines on the roadmap for WACIP implementation.

Participants will also discuss the ECOWAS Commission's actions on WACIP aimed at reinforcing sustainable socio-economic development in West Africa and regional integration; ways of promoting exchanges and emphasizing the role of various stakeholders in mobilization around WACIP and its implementation.

Another objective of the symposium is to mobilize the support of regional banks and development institutions as well as Technical and Financial Partners, for the implementation of WACIP and funding of regional programmes. The symposium will also provide the opportunity for presentations and discussions on WACIP related themes on which the ECOWAS Commission is taking actions with national and community stakeholders.

These include the reinforcement of access of manufactured goods from ECOWAS to markets, the ECOWAS agri-business initiative, ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme, harmonization of business laws and development of a common ECOWAS Regional Investment Code as well as the Common External Tariff and the ECOWAS Free Trade.
