AfDB to Hold Follow-Up Workshop After 1st Africa Forum On STI

The African Development Bank is organizing a workshop on 23 May to follow up from the recommendations of the Science, Technology and Innovation in Action parallel session on "eLearning, mLearning, eHealth and mHealth" stemming from the 1st Africa Forum on Science Technology and Innovation (STI).

The session is a pre-event to the eLearning Africa Conference (eLA), an international conference on ICT for Development Education and Training in Benin, which will run from 23 to 25 May. The eLA Conference is billed as the largest gathering of eLearning and ICT supported education and training professionals in Africa. It aims to enable participants to develop multinational and cross-industry contacts and partnerships, as well as to enhance their knowledge, expertise and abilities.

The workshop will showcase the best proven practical solutions for eLearning, eHealth and mHealth from around the world in order to solve some of the continent's most pressing problems in education and health. The session will also continue the discussion on how e-learning, e-health and m-health programmes can be designed, developed and implemented in Africa by public and private sectors, as well as NGOs, research institutions and universities in Africa.

This workshop and the 1st Africa STI Forum are part of the African Development Bank's (AfDB) Human Capital Development strategy. The strategy aims at promoting inclusive growth and capturing the dividend of a young and large working population in Africa, in order to help countries compete in the global market and provide employment.

Through promoting and supporting the development of science technology and innovation in Africa, the AfDB is helping to "move Africa from consumers to producers of knowledge", as outlined by AfDB president, Donald Kaberuka, during the STI Forum.

The eLearning Africa 2012 event will be the first gathering of ICT experts in Africa since the STI Forum in Nairobi in April. With the STI forum as the starting point, the e-learning pre-event will be the first building block and gathering of experts and policymakers in ensuring the continued North-South and South-South collaborations in STI. It will strengthen public-private partnerships and create an Africa-focused global network of development innovators and problem solvers.
