The African Development Bank (AfDB) will promote urban sanitation in Sokodé, Togo, and enable the population to benefit from toilets, through the valuation of fecal sludge and micro-credit.

This project materialized with the signature, on May 29 in Marrakech, of a donation protocol, for a total amount of 1.185 million euros, between the AfDB and the Togolese Government.

For the Togolese Government, it will be about considering the whole fecal sludge chain, reinforcing the capacity of a few community micro-enterprises and financing access to cleaning. The project also consists of the facilitation of access to collection, transportation and treatment services. Its financing will serve to assure food security, through the availability of fertilizers originating from the valuation of fecal sludge.

Signing on behalf of the AfDB, the Director of the Water and Sanitation Department (OWAS), Sering Jallow, highlighted the importance of the toilet project which, according to him, is the minimum necessary for the most vulnerable communities, to reach the Millennium Development Goals in terms of water and sanitation.

The Minister of Economy and Finance of Togo, Adji Oteth Ayassor, expressed his country's gratitude to the AfDB for its support to numerous development projects, "which contribute towards the reduction of poverty in the country's disadvantaged communities."
