press release

Over US $30 million in concessional funds has been made available for innovative private sector projects that seek to improve climate change adaptation or readiness in Niger, Mozambique and Zambia. This financing is part of the Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (PPCR), a financing window of the Climate Investment Funds (CIF).

Information seminars will be held in Niamey, Maputo and Lusaka (see dates and venues below) to raise awareness about this opportunity. The seminar will demonstrate the wide variety of private sector projects which can be considered as contributing to resilience, mainstreaming and adaptation. The deadline for applications to avail of this funding is April 30, 2014.

During a previous call for proposals last year, the African Development Bank (AfDB) support resulted in the securing of financing for seven projects in the areas of forests, climate resilience and renewable energy. With this new call for proposals, the AfDB hopes to improve upon that number and, at the same time, support the private sector in activities associated with reducing countries' exposure to climate risk and uncertainty.

The AfDB is an implementing agency for the CIF, which is one of the largest fast-tracked climate financing instruments in the world, valued at approximately US $8 billion. Under this competitive program, financing in the form of preferential loans has been made available to support the private sector in activities associated with reducing countries' exposure to climate risk and uncertainty.

The AfDB team will be available for one-to-one meetings with business representatives the day following each seminar, to discuss possible eligible business concepts with a view to develop and submit Project Concept Notes. Business representatives who are not available for the seminar but wish to discuss project concepts with the AfDB should send an email to Sergio Santos.
