The Union of the Comoros paid tribute to the long-lasting support provided by the African Development Bank (AfDB) during a ceremony held in the capital of Moroni on February 2. Donald Kaberuka, President of the AfDB, was awarded the country's highest distinction, the medal of "Commander of the Order of the Green Crescent of the Comoros", in recognition of this support. The honour was conferred during a reception hosted by the President of the Comoros, Ikililou Dhoinine, as part of Kaberuka's two-day visit.

The Comoran President explained that this distinction was a reward for Kaberuka's personal role in the AfDB's support, which has enabled the country to embark on reforms. These reforms helped the country reach the completion point of the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative in December 2012. "Your support has enabled the Comoros to return to the international financial community", explained the Comoran President.

Kaberuka in turn expressed his gratitude to the Comoran Government, which "paid tribute to the work of all AfDB staff" in addition to its President. Kaberuka also urged the Comoran Government to pursue structural reforms and the consolidation of peace.

The first day of the AfDB President's visit was also marked by a tour of the Vouadjou power station, an AfDB-financed project in Moroni. The electricity sector benefits from the AfDB's support in order to promote economic growth. Kaberuka also met private sector organizations and encouraged them to support the Government's reforms.

Kaberuka's visit concluded on February 3.
