Uganda is poised to establish its national community of practice on managing for development results from March 26-27, 2015 at the Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala.

Spearheaded by the Office of the Prime Minister, the learning and planning event will prove essential to consolidating country efforts at stimulating a results-oriented culture; while positioning managing for development results (MfDR) as a change management process for more results-focused and accountable programmes and implementation structures.

Uganda scores higher than the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) average on leadership, planning, budgeting, institutional capacity, monitoring and evaluation, and accountability. On a national level, however, much remains to be done in implementing, ensuring results, and mainstreaming regional integration issues in key policies and programmes such as the national development plan.

The AfriK4R initiative of the African Community of Practice (AfCoP), of which Uganda is a member, seeks to help accelerate regional integration; establish effective public financial systems; facilitate trade; and improve the business climate on the African continent through knowledge and best practice exchange on results-based management between member states of COMESA and the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU).

The learning and validation workshop is Uganda's first activity under its AfriK4R country roadmap on attaining results and will be opened by Tarsis Kabwegyere, Minister for General Duties at the Office of the Prime Minister. A cross-cutting audience of about 50 representatives from Government, Parliament, private sector, academia and civil society is expected and will be trained on results-based management principles and practices. Additionally, the findings of the national MfDR assessment report will be validated, while representatives map out a path to results - an action plan designed to accelerate key policies in support of COMESA regional integration objectives.

With high-level stakeholder buy-in, the new Uganda community of practice could potentially promote evidence-based decision-making and translate policies and programmes into a performance-driven culture that echoes through the echelons of Ugandan society.

The Africa for Results (AfriK4R) initiative, AfCoP's flagship program, aims to promote regional integration in Africa through the use of managing for development results (MfDR) principles and practices. To date, 17 countries have committed to the AfriK4R initiative, namely Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Côte d'Ivoire, DR Congo, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The WAEMU and COMESA regional economic communities are also partners in the AfriK4R initiative.
