Africa: Togo Coach Claude Le Roy Faces Jail

8 June 2016

Claude Le Roy is reportedly facing a two-year prison sentence and 18 months suspension in France for his role in an alleged fraudulent transfer of players.

According to GhanaWeb Prosecutors demanded a heavy sentence for the current Togo national team coach for the role he played in the case when he was the General Manager of French club Strasbourg.

Among the transfers in question is that of the attacker Peggy Luyindula who moved to Olympique Lyon in 2001 for 58 million francs, plus a bonus of 11 million according to GhanaWeb.

Le Roy's lawyers have argued that the coach's lack of knowledge of the legal framework caused the illegal transfers to happen.

The cases dates back to the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Leroy, who started coaching African teams in 1985 with Cameroon has gone on to coach half a dozen other national teams on the continent including Ghana,Senegal and DR Congo.
