Dr Akinwumi Adesina will lead a high-level delegation from the African Development Bank Group to join global leaders and institutions to amplify Africa's priorities on climate change at the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP28.

The annual conference is the single global platform for all nations to negotiate an internationally agreed way forward to combat climate change. COP28 is expected to convene over 70,000 participants, including heads of state, government officials, industry leaders, multilateral development finance institutions, policymakers, private sector business leaders, academics and youth and civil society representatives.

As in previous years, the Bank delegation will fully participate in the conference, which will take place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from 30 November 2023 to 12 December 2023.

Through its climate change action agenda, the Bank has made substantial commitments to integrate climate considerations and scale up its climate investments in African countries. As such, COP28 provides a critical opportunity for engagement by the Bank to advance its climate change objectives.

The Bank's participation in COP28 aims to increase its visibility within the global climate change community, mobilize additional resources for climate funds and facilities and support efforts to strengthen Africa's voice in the climate change negotiations. The Bank will capitalize on its efforts and experience in promoting climate-compatible development in Africa and strengthen its pipeline of climate change-related projects and partnerships with strategic partners.

To achieve these objectives, the Bank will undertake the following activities:

High-level representation at the World Leaders Summit, Ministerial Dialogues, and the key thematic events

Co-host the Africa Pavilion with partners in the Blue Zone (Opportunity Petal, B6, Building 74) to feature the Bank's activities and other key events by African regional member countries.

Co-host a joint MDB Pavilion (Blue Zone, Opportunity Petal, B6, Building 74) to showcase how the Bank works with other MDBs.

Host strategic side events on climate change and the Bank's High-Five priorities, showcasing its flagship initiatives, facilitating dialogue, and advancing collaboration on key areas of the Bank's climate work.

Organize Africa Day, in collaboration with key partners, including the Africa Union Commission and other Pan-African institutions

Support the African group of negotiators (AGN) to engage effectively in negotiations to advance Africa's needs and interests through technical and financial support, partnership, and collaboration.

Dr Adesina and senior management members will also hold bilateral meetings with key partners, donors, African member countries, and other stakeholders to build and strengthen partnerships, generate knowledge, mobilize resources, and advance our pipeline of climate-related projects.

This year's conference will feature the first global stocktake that will comprehensively assess progress since adopting the Paris Agreement. This will help align the efforts on climate action, including measures that need to be implemented to bridge the gaps in progress.

All Bank activities at the Africa Pavilion will be livestreamed on the Bank's COP28 microsite and the following dedicated channels, including social media.
