The new Country Manager of the African Development Bank Group for Burundi, Mouna Diawara, presented her letters of accreditation to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and Development Cooperation, Edouard Bizimana, in Bujumbura on 3 March 2026.
Welcoming the new Country Manager, Minister Bizimana praised the strong partnership between Burundi and the African Development Bank Group and expressed confidence that Diawara would help further deepen cooperation during her tenure. He also reaffirmed the Burundian government's commitment to supporting the Bank's mission in the country.
Diawara reiterated the African Development Bank Group's commitment to supporting Burundi in achieving its national development ambitions, including the targets set out in the Burundi Vision of becoming an "Emerging Country" by 2040 and a "Developed Country" by 2060, to improve the well-being of Burundians.
The African Development Bank Group has supported Burundi since 1974, with cumulative commitments exceeding $1.2 billion. Current cooperation is guided by the Country Strategy Paper for 2024-2029, which seeks to strengthen the country's economic resilience, reduce fragility and support sustained and inclusive growth.
Under the strategy, the Bank focuses on two priority areas: supporting agricultural value chains and economic governance to strengthen resilience; and expanding energy and transport infrastructure to stimulate inclusive and green growth.
As of 3 March 2026, the Bank Group's active portfolio in Burundi comprised 19 projects valued at $501.4 million. The portfolio covers transport (44 percent); energy (20 percent); agriculture (23 percent); social sector (6 percent); water and sanitation (3 percent); multi-sector (3 percent), and finance (1 percent).
