Ransom Paid to Free South African Hostage Held in Mali?

International Relations and Co-operation Minister Maite Nkoane-Mashabane has denied that U.S.$4 million was paid to secure the release of Stephen McGowan from Mali. McGowan was abducted by al-Qaeda operatives in November 2011 and released after nearly six years in captivity.
