Nigerian Court Orders Shell to Pay Fine Over Oil Spill

The Federal High Court in Lagos has dismissed a suit by Shell challenging the imposition of a U.S.$3.6 billion fine on it by the government. The oil giant had sued the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, challenging its powers to impose levies or fines over oil spills. Shell has been criticised in the past for not doing enough to clean up spills and maintain infrastructure.
