President John Magufuli has said if women have more children the country's economy will grow citing China, Nigeria and India's economy as examples of countries that have gained from having huge populations. In 2018 he appealed to men to marry more than one wife, provided that they are able to provide for their basic needs, so that sex work can be reduced.
