Tunisian authorities have detained presidential candidate Nabil Karoui on charges of tax evasion and money laundering. The media mogul is a key contender the presidential poll scheduled for September 15. Karoui's Nessma TV and two other broadcasters were banned by electoral and media authorities for not holding licences and influencing government bodies.

The electoral commission has approved some 26 candidates, including two women, to run for president next month, with 71 other applicants were denied a spot on the ballot. Read more »
