June 12 Is Not a Date, It Is History for Nigeria

June 12, 1993 was the day on which Moshood Abiola is believed to have won the Nigerian presidential election but the results were annulled by military president General Ibrahim Babangida after allegations of corruption. This was followed a few months later by a military coup by General Sani Abacha who had Abiola arrested for treason. He was detained for 4 years, time mostly spent in solitary confinement. He died on July 7,1998 at the age of 60, the day he was supposed to be released from prison.
