Somali Leaders Again Fail to Reach Consensus on Crucial Elections

Somalia's leaders have failed to agree on the main agenda for a crucial electoral meeting, highlighting the unattended fissures between them. The agenda-setting meeting brought together President Mohamed Farmaajo and leaders of the five federal member states, as well as the governor of Benadir region, the metropolis of Mogadishu. The meeting was one of the latest moves by Farmaajo, who has failed to bring all the leaders around the table, with some protesting against his alleged high-handedness. Farmaajo's term formally expired on February 8, 2021 but the country's top leaders have been unable to implement an electoral deal reached on September 17, 2020 to run an indirect election.
