Africa Clocks Fastest Surge in Covid-19 Cases During 2021 - WHO

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Africa recorded an n 83% surge in new Covid-19 cases during the second week of December, 2021. Driven by the Delta and the Omicron variants, the rise in infections has also been recorded alongside a decrease in deaths from the virus.

However, a WHO pandemic assessment warns that more waves are anticipated as updated forecasts predict that the continent may not reach 70% vaccine coverage until August 2024.

As of December 14, 2021, confirmed cases of Covid-19 from 55 African countries reached 8,965,128 while over 164,971,945 vaccinations have been administered across the continent.
