Germany, South Africa Collaborate On Green Hydrogen Development

The South African government has announced a collaboration with the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development to promote the development of green hydrogen in the country.

According to Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungubele, the project aims to enhance capacity and knowledge of South African stakeholders in the green hydrogen and Powerfuels sector, and and enable the creation of a green hydrogen export economy, among other goals.

This marks the latest in the development of green hydrogen projects in sub-Saharan Africa, following Namibia and its announcement of securing U.S.$6.3 million to develop the country's first large-scale vertically integrated green hydrogen project in the Tsau //Khaeb national park. According to Dr Emanuele Taibi, Head of the Power Sector Transformation Strategies, green hydrogen is defined as hydrogen produced by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable electricity.
