President Museveni's Deal With Mao Sets Ugandan Tongues Wagging

Democratic Party (DP) president Norbert Mao has signed a deal with ruling party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) national chairman President Yoweri Museveni to work together, the Nile Post reports. A day after the deal was inked, Mao was appointed minister of justice and constitutional affairs in a move that generated a buzz among Ugandans.

Negotiations between Museveni and Mao have been going on since 2021. Sources close to Mao allege that the delay in reaching a deal was due to Museveni's personal demands which required Mao to join the government as an individual while Mao insisted on doing so while remaining affiliated with the DP.

The deal also comes after Mao's refusal to abandon his party when he told DP delegates on March 6, 2022: "I will never be bought with money and I can never join the government and leave my party behind." Mao had also previously criticised former vice president Gilbert Bukenya who agreed to work with Museveni follwing criticism against the Ugandan leader.
