Nigerian Court Blocks 'Supercop' Abba Kyari's Extradition to U.S.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected a request to extradite suspended senior police officer Abba Kyari to the U.S. to face fraud charges. Justice Inyang Ekwo said the request would not be granted because he was already standing trial for another offence in Nigeria.

The suspended deputy commissioner being tried in a separate case in Nigeria for his alleged links to drug traffickers.

Kyari has been implicated in a case of money laundering, fraud, and other crimes involving a Nigerian social media influencer Ramon Abbas, alias Hushpuppi.

Hushpuppi pleaded guilty in California to money laundering and also claimed he had paid a bribe to Kyari to arrest a syndicate member with whom he had fallen out. The U.S. authorities then declared Kyari wanted and sought his extradition to stand trial.

Kyari was lauded as Nigeria's most decorated policeman in charge of the police's Intelligence Response Team until his suspension. He was conferred with a presidential medal for courage by Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari in 2016 and became known as a "supercop".
