Nigerian Top Cop Named in Hushpuppi Fraud Charges

Abba Kyari, a deputy commissioner of police, was indicted by U.S. authorities as part of the investigation of alleged fraudster, Ramon Abbas, popularly known as Hushpuppi. Hushpuppi, who recently agreed to plead guilty to multi-million dollar fraud charges by the FBI, told investigators that he gave Kyari some of the proceeds of his crime. In the U.S. Attorney's Office statement, Kyari is accused of agreeing to detain one of Hushpuppi's co-conspirators after they had fallen out.  

Kyari has denied any involvement in fraud or corruption, describing the allegations as "false" and saying that his "hands are clean". But U.S. investigators found Kyari culpable and a U.S. court has ordered his arrest. The Nigerian Inspector-General of Police has ordered 'an internal review of the allegations against Kyari, a celebrated police officer for his efforts in leading the fight against violent crime.
