South Africa, India Deal to Boost Local Covid-19 Vaccine Assembly

The Serum Institute of India signed a deal with South Africa's Aspen Pharmacare to make four vaccines used in Africa, Vicky Stark writes for Voice of America.

The deal has been hailed as saving local vaccine production, which was at risk of shutting down after receiving no orders for a Covid-19 vaccine. But medical aid group Doctors Without Borders says more efforts are needed for vaccines to be fully produced in Africa for Africans.

Four routine paediatric vaccines will be made in South Africa with products from bulk drug substances supplied by India's Serum Institute.

As of September 5, 2022, a total of 12,141,015 cases of Covid-19 has been confirmed in Africa of which 256,356 proved fatal and 10,378,407 resulted in recovery. Vaccinations administered to date amount to 375,080,700.
