Guinea's 2009 Stadium Massacre Suspects Go on Trial

The United Nations has pledged its support for justice as the trial of the alleged perpetrators of the September 28, 2009 stadium massacre in Conakry begins. The massacre 13 years ago saw 157 people lose their lives, allegedly at the hands of former junta leader Moussa Camara and his lieutenants. Over 100 women were also raped or sexually assaulted at the time,  Amnesty International reports.

On that day in 2009, tens of thousands of people gathered at Conakry's stadium to demonstrate the strength of the opposition and dissuade Moussa "Dadis" Camara - who had come to power through a military coup nine months earlier - from running for president in January 2010, writes Cristina Krippahl for Deutsche Welle.
