Lesotho Goes to the Polls Amid Uncertainty Over Reforms

The mountain kingdom of Lesotho is a landlocked country encircled by South Africa. On Friday, October 7, 2022 the nation goes to the polls to elect a new prime minister amid uncertainty over the future of much-needed reforms that were declared null and void at the eleventh hour.

Violence and brutality by security forces also threaten the elections, which over 50 political parties are contesting, writes Liesl Louw-Vaudran for the Institute for Security Studies. Lesotho is currently led by Moeketsi Majoro.

Majoro was sworn in on May 20, 2020 after the resignation of Tom Thabane, following allegations of his involvement in the murder of his estranged wife Lipolelo Thabane in 2017.
