Ghana's Teachers Protest Over Official's Appointment
On October 18, this year, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo terminated the January 2021 appointment of Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa to the Ghana Education Service and appointed Dr Eric Nkansah as his replacement.
This resulted in a protest by three teachers' unions which describe him as an outsider being imposed on them and implored the President to reverse his decision and appoint someone who will be wholeheartedly accepted by the teaching fraternity.
The teacher unions, the Ghana National Association of Teachers the National Association of Graduate Teachers and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers declared a nationwide strike over the appointment.
A meeting between the government's representatives and leadership of the three teacher unions in Accra to end the recently announced industrial strike ended inconclusively.
Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Bright Wireko Brobbey, who addressed the media, described the meeting as constructive despite the inability of the parties to reach a final decision.
