Quarterly South African Crime Stats Reveal Spike in Murders

According to the quarterly crime statistics for the fourth quarter of 2022/2023, violent crimes have seen a 4% increase during the period between January and March 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. This includes a total of 6,289 reported murders, indicating a rise of 3.4%. Attempted murders surged by 8.4% with 6,192 cases reported during the fourth quarter of 2022/2023.

The leading factors contributing to murder, attempted murder and assault with grievous bodily harm appear to be arguments, misunderstandings, road rage, and provocation. Meanwhile, the government confirmed that U.S.$90.0 million has been allocated for the procurement of police vehicles to improve police visibility in its crime fighting efforts.
