International Court to Probe War Crimes in Sudan's West Darfur

The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) said on Thursday July 13, 2023 that he was investigating fresh allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Darfur region, including the recent killings of 87 members of the ethnic Masalit community, reportedly carried out by the Rapid Security Forces and its militia.

Briefing the United Nations Security Council, Prosecutor Karim Khan, said that the mandate of his office was clear. "[Our mandate is] ongoing with respect to crimes within our jurisdiction, the crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes; and any individual who is found to be committing those crimes within our jurisdiction will be investigated," he said.

allAfrica's Jerry Chifamba reports that the UN human rights office had said that a mass grave containing at least 87 people, including members of the ethnic Masalit group, was discovered in West Darfur, Sudan, and that it had reliable information pointing to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) as the perpetrators.

Earlier, Human Rights Watch said that the Egyptian government's decision in June 2023 to require all Sudanese to obtain visas to enter Egypt had reduced access to safety for women, children, and older people fleeing the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

The Sudanese army and rival military group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), have been battling since mid-April. Hundreds of people have been killed and nearly three million have been displaced, including to neighbouring countries.
