AU Becomes Permanent Member of G20

The African Union is now a permanent member of the group of the world's 20 largest economies, a significant recognition of Africa as its more than 50 nations strive for a more significant position on the world arena.

The G20, or Group of 20, is an intergovernmental forum comprising 19 countries and the European Union. It works to address major issues related to the global economy, such as international financial stability, climate change mitigation and sustainable development.

Heads of State and Government of the 55 African countries in the African Union begin the organisation's 32nd ordinary session in Addis Ababa.
