Gabon Promises to Invest Seized Wealth From Ousted Bongo Govt

Gabon's military junta says the government appointed by transitional president, General Brice Oligui Nguema, has begun consultations to determine how best to use the items recovered from state officials and business executives under the rule of ousted President Ali Ben Bongo.

The military-appointed government says it will invest more than U.S.$10 million and distribute hundreds of luxury vehicles said to be part of ill-gotten wealth recovered from Bongo's family and friends.

Gabon's Prime Minister Raymond Ndong Sima said on state television on Monday, October 9, 2023 that the junta recovered about U.S.$11.6 million and close to 350 luxury vehicles over the past 45 days.

General Nguema who led the coup that ousted Ali Bongo on August 30, 2023 has set a two-year transition period to democracy.
