Sex Misconduct Claim - South Africa Recalls DR Congo Peacekeepers

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has recalled eight of its soldiers who were detained by the United Nations in Democratic Republic of the Congo for "sexual abuse and exploitation", the Daily Maverick reports.

Earlier, the United Nations peacekeeping mission in DRC (MONUSCO) says it took "immediate and robust action" in response to reports of alleged sexual misconduct by its troops, writes Moise Bahati for The New Times.

The eight peacekeepers were detained in the city of Beni in North Kivu province after being caught with sex workers at an unauthorised bar after curfew.

The eastern DR Congo-based UN mission said it "strongly condemns such behaviour that is unbefitting of UN personnel".
