Democracy, Stability Top Agenda as Ecowas Members Meet

West African leaders gathered at the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) summit, vowed to tackle terrorism with a standby force review and regional collaboration.

Discussions centered on gradually easing sanctions on the Niger Republic through engaging its military junta for a transition roadmap toward restoring constitutional order, with the promise of maintaining sanctions if compliance isn't met.

The summit applauded peace initiatives in recent elections across member states, extending support for constitutional reforms in Gambia and condemning coup attempts while endorsing unity agreements in Sierra Leone.

Chairman Bola Tinubu underscored the pivotal role of good governance in stabilising the region, advocating for engaging military-led countries with transition plans and affirming Ecowas' staunch stance against unconstitutional changes of government, specifically expressing support for democratically elected leaders in Sierra Leone and Guinea Bissau.
