Nigerian President Tightens Travel Reins on Govt Officials

In a major cost-cutting move, President Bola Tinubu has slashed the size of official delegations for foreign and domestic trips across the federal government, including his own office, the vice president's, and the first lady's.

Tinubu has ordered the use of local security agencies during state visits instead of maintaining large security details from Abuja. For international travel, strict limits on accompanying personnel have been imposed: four staff members for ministers, the first lady to five, and a maximum of 20 individuals for the President. For domestic trips, the limits are 25, 10, and 15 for the President, First Lady, and Vice President respectively.

These initiative aims to curb government spending and promote fiscal responsibility by streamlining travel expenses for all top officials. This move follows widespread criticism of Nigeria's large delegation at the recent COP28 Climate Change Conference held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
