Nigerian Soldiers Arrested After Torture Video Goes Viral

The Nigerian army has arrested two soldiers following the circulation of a viral video depicting them allegedly torturing a civilian. In the footage, a man in military attire and another in civilian clothing are seen kicking and whipping a shirtless man who pleads for mercy.

The army expressed "utmost dismay" over the "unprofessional conduct" displayed in the video and confirmed the identification and arrest of the involved soldiers. The incident occurred in Rivers state, Nigeria, though the date remains unclear. Social media condemnation ensued, with widespread criticism of the soldiers' actions as abusive and a misuse of power.

The army has pledged a thorough investigation and assured that those responsible will face sanctions. Nigeria's army has previously faced international criticism for alleged human rights abuses, including torture, arbitrary arrests, and extrajudicial killings.
