Nigeria's Lagos Govt Bans Use of Styrofoam, Single-Use Plastics

The Lagos State government has banned the usage and distribution of styrofoam and other single-use plastics in the state with immediate effect.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said that the decision stems from the environmental havoc caused by non-biodegradable styrofoam, particularly clogging drainage channels despite regular cleaning efforts.

He warned of heavy fines, penalties, and potential closure for non-compliance, urging a shift towards alternatives to combat the environmental consequences of indiscriminate plastic disposal.
