Namibia's President Geingob Dies; Mbumba Sworn in as Successor

Namibian President Hage Gottfried Geingob, 82, died just after midnight on Sunday in a Windhoek hospital, after cancer treatment. He was 82. His death was announced by Vice President Nangolo Mbumba on television on Sunday morning.

In a solemn ceremony at State House.Sunday afternoon, Mbumba was sworn in as the county' fourth president and Dr Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as vice president

Geingob joined Nmibia's liberation movement, Swapo, in the early 1960s and went on to serve in the leadership structures of the organisation until his death. He was Namibia's first Prime Minister after independence from white-ruled South Africa in 1990. He served again as Prime Minister from 2012 to 2015, when he left that post to become Namibia's third elected president. He was reelected in 2019.

Geingob's administration launched an all-of-government effort at poverty eradication, leadership transparency, gender equality and conomic prosperity.
