Puntland Withdraws from Somalia's Federal System

Somalia's semi-autonomous region of Puntland announced its withdrawal from the federal system, opting to govern independently until constitutional amendments proposed by the central government are ratified through a nationwide referendum.

The federal parliament passed several Constitutional changes to establish a more stable political system. Still, critics argue that these alterations, including provisions for direct presidential elections and increased executive powers, risk centralizing authority excessively.

Puntland's decision to assert its autonomy poses a challenge for President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, already grappling with security threats from al Qaeda-linked insurgents, piracy resurgence, and struggles to exert federal control over the breakaway region of Somaliland following its port agreement with Ethiopia.
