Nigeria First to Roll Out New "Revolutionary" Meningitis Vaccine

Nigeria has become the first country globally to implement the new Men5CV vaccine against meningitis, which the World Health Organization (WHO) described as "revolutionary."

This significant step is part of the country's efforts to combat the disease, as Nigeria is one of the hotspots of meningitis in Africa. Last year, there was a 50% increase in annual cases across 26 African countries, including Nigeria. Between last October and mid-March, the country reported 1,742 suspected cases and 153 deaths across seven states.

The new vaccine is an improvement over the previous one, as it protects against the five major strains of meningitis prevalent in Nigeria, helping advance the WHO's goal to eliminate the disease by 2030.
