U.S., Niger Delegations Meet to Discuss U.S. Forces' Withdrawal

The U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense Christopher Maier, along with other officials from the Pentagon, are meeting in Niamey with members of the Nigerien government, months after Niger denounced its military basing agreements with the United States. Officials say the meeting aims to "ensure that this withdrawal takes place in the best possible conditions, guaranteeing order, security, and compliance with set deadlines".

There are about 900 U.S. military personnel in Niger. The U.S. has had two military bases in the country to monitor terror groups in the region. Countries in the Sahel, including Niger, Mali, Nigeria and Burkina Faso, have seen a rise in jihadist movements.
