Mozambique's Electoral Body Registers 'Non-Existent' Voters

The electoral commission in Mozambique has reportedly said it included nearly a million additional electorates in its register that the country's National Statistics Institute says "cannot exist".

The additional number will allow six extra seats for the northwestern province of Gaza, one-third of whose voters would be deemed "fake"  under the current scheme. This would also mean 5% of the total voters in the country were "fraudulently" registered.

The country is expected to go to the polls in October to elect a new president and members of parliament. Analysts said the ruling Liberation Front (FRELIMO) is widely expected to win because it "controls state institutions and retains power through election irregularities and an uneven political playing field".
