UN Refugee Chief Urges End to 'Insane' Sudan War
To mark World Refugee Day, the head of the UN refugee agency has urged influential stakeholders in Sudan to push the warring parties to the negotiation table in order to secure a ceasefire. Filippo Grandi said this is necessary to find a lasting political solution. "Without that," he said, "I am afraid we will see more refugees and more suffering".
The United Nations has warned that five million people in the coiuntry are on the brink of famine, and millions more are severely food insecure.
The war that erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has triggered political instability, a severe humanitarian emergency, and widespread human rights violations.
