Dozens Dead, Missing After Boat Capsizes in Nigeria

Nigeria's Emergency Management Agency has confirmed that 93 bodies have been recovered so far in central Niger State, where approximately 150 passengers remain missing after a boat capsized.

Authorities report that the boat capsized after overloading due to about 300 passengers from the Mundi community who had attended a religious celebration in nearby Gbajibo village. 150 passengers were rescued, but the rest are yet to be accounted for.

In Nigeria, boat accidents are common because safety regulations on waterways, including load limits and the use of safety jackets, are poorly enforced and ignored by locals. Authorities also say locals often ignore warnings about late-night boat travel.

The Niger State emergency agency says rescue workers continue to search for more survivors along the River Niger.
