Candidate Motorcade Attacked; Electoral Body Sued in Mozambique

Mais Integridade has filed a lawsuit against the Zambézia Provincial Elections Commission (CPE) for not issuing credentials to observers within the required timeframe. Of 279 applications submitted, only 45 credentials were granted in the last 15 days, violating a law that mandates a decision within five days.

Meanwhile, the police changed the approved route to block the motorcade of the Optimistic Party for the Development of Mozambique (Podemos) candidate Venancio Mondlane as a large crowd passed rival Frelimo offices, leading to shots being fired.

More electoral fraud tactics were reported, including Frelimo members voting multiple times and distributing multiple ballots to state employees. Observers have raised concerns about the integrity of the electoral process, especially after the country's election fraud history.

Police and Frelimo in Chimoio tried to stop a planned Podemos motorcade with a large crowd passing the Frelimo headquarters on October 3. Five people were taken to the emergency services of the provincial hospital. Four of them were injured in accidents involving motorcycles and a vehicle, while the fifth suffered a physical assault. The police fired several shots to prevent the Podemos motorcade from passing. Some of the shots were fired from behind the Frelimo vehicle that was blocking the road. In addition to the Frelimo vehicle, in the video shared on social media, the police can be seen placing a vehicle to block the road behind the red vehicle used by Frelimo in order to hinder the passage of the Podemos parade.
