African Leaders Commit To 'Concrete Plans' On Energy Sector

Dozens of African heads of state, as well as representatives from international organizations and the private sector, meeting at the "Mission 300" summit in Dar es Salaam have committed to expand access to "reliable, affordable, and sustainable" electricity to power economic growth and improve the quality of life in the region.

Launched in April 2024, "Mission 300," is a collaboration between the World Bank, the African Development Bank, and global partners which aims to advance an ambitious initiative that will deliver electricity to 300 million Africans by 2030.

"The upcoming summit will unveil new initiatives aimed at boosting domestic resource mobilization and encourage cross-border trade to spread risk and increase financing for energy access," the AfDB's Director for Energy Financial Solutions, Wale Shonibare, said ahead of the meeting.

Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for the world's largest "unelectrified population".
