Africa Must Not Miss the AI Revolution, Summit Hears

Rwanda's Paul Kagame has issued a rallying call to African leaders to embrace artificial intelligence (AI) and ensure they do not fall behind in the technological revolution. Kagame said Africa "urgently" needs strategic investments in digital infrastructure, workforce development, and continental integration to secure its AI-driven future.

"Africa can't afford to be left behind, once again playing catch up. We have to adopt, cooperate, and compete because it is in our best interest to do so," said Kagame. He commended the African Union, Smart Africa, and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for championing the establishment of the Africa AI Council, which, among others, aims to guide the continent's AI development.

The two-day meeting convened over 1,000 policymakers, business leaders, and interest groups as the continent looked to take its AI ambitions onto the global stage. Experts have urged governments across the continent to ease regulatory barriers and create more opportunities for private sector investment as a means of advancing Africa's artificial intelligence agenda.
