Cameroon’s Main Opposition Candidate Kamto Barred From Elections

Maurice Kamto, a prominent opposition figure and vocal critic of Cameroon's long-time President Paul Biya, has been excluded from the list of approved candidates for the country's 12 October presidential election.

Kamto sought to run as the candidate for the African Movement for New Independence and Democracy (MANIDEM). He came second to President Paul Biya in the 2018 presidential election, representing the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (MRC).

The decision by the Cameroonian electoral board to exclude Kamto from the country's upcoming presidential elections raises questions about the credibility of that election. Biya, 92, has been in power since 1982 and wants an eighth term.
