Congo and M23 Rebels Agree to Form Ceasefire Monitoring Body

The Congolese government and the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group have reached an agreement for the creation of joint ceasefire monitoring body. Representatives from both groups made the announcement via social media posts. It came after months of negotiation in the Qatari Capital, Doha.

The body will oversee the implementation of a permanent ceasefire, investigate reports of violations and help prevent renewed fighting, Qatar's foreign ministry said in a statement. It will include representatives from Congo, M23 and the 12-country International Conference on the Great Lakes Region.

The agreement marks a significant progress after the two sides missed an August 18 deadline to finalise a peace deal.
