Malawi Unprepared For Planting Season Amid Crisis, Says Mutharika

President Peter Mutharika has said Malawi is unprepared for the upcoming planting season, with limited available fertilizers and the procurement of other farming inputs "dangerously" behind schedule.

Mutharika's rare admission was made in a meeting with an IMF delegation, where he outlined a series of crises the country currently faces: a foreign exchange shortage, unstable fuel supplies, and rising debt repayments. He said the country's current economic conditions make it difficult to service its debts.

The IMF delegation is expected to meet other stakeholders in an effort to mobilize emergency support for food, fertilizer, foreign exchange, and fuel.
