Ghana Wants UN to Designate Slave Trade As Crime Against Humanity

President John Mahama has announced that Ghana will submit a resolution to the UN General Assembly designating the African slave trade as "the most serious crime against humanity".

Speaking at the conclusion of the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, the Ghanaian President said the UN resolution is merely the first step. He noted that the initiative offers a historic opportunity to affirm a long-standing truth, which will "lay the foundation for genuine reconciliation and real equality."

Mahama's predecessor, Nana Akufo-Addo, previously called for a united front in November 2023 to demand reparations for the transatlantic slave trade and the damage caused during the colonial era.
